ok, this is going to be pretty disheveled:
as I already wrote here, the columbian writer and diplomat of swedish descent Léon de Greiff (1895-1976) spoke about Korpilombolo as the "absolute shelter", even if he only visited there shortly, once. He, says Wiki, meant it as a philosophical metaphor.
But if... (short break. it began hailing all of a sudden, i had to run and save my washing) But if you look at one of these world-maps for climate change, like in 40 years or such, when the temperature has risen, the water is up, mass extinction of beasts, plants and humans has occurred, Korpi will be one of the very few places that could still be more or less habitable. Is that why quite a few people disembark on zeroglotte on the "Korpilombolo Project" tag? What are they looking for? Real-estate? A survival group living off cloudberries and dried reindeer?
If you had to invent a mean of communication/information/storage for a energy-crazed civilization living on a planet of finished resources, and working tirelessly at her own doom, what would you come up with? Logically, I mean, in an Darwinian evolutionary way? Survival-of-the-most-likely-to-bring-it-all-to-an-end? You'll invent this beautiful super-effective energy-driven device that's so easy and fun to use that in no time every thought and word and image of that civilization will be stored in it, to the point that many many many things will only exist in the device. So when the energy begins to lack, the people will be cut from their artefacts and...and what? It's just that bit-sized instantly rewarding stuff (any stuff) seems the perfect food for a dying person, cat, sycamore.
But of course the virtuality is what makes me free. A little bit freer.

Protestant abyss
Yesterday I received a heavy letter. 
"It takes a protestant country to print carrots on international stamps" wrote the Scout Sender, after more important matters. How true thought I, before really looking into the matter. But then I did... Remember me talking about shadow sides? Well and do you see the small inoffensive hole in the wooden board under the carrots? My eyes, long as winter nights, had to peep into it. And this is what they saw:
Can you guess where this church stands? Can you? You're right, Korpilombolo.
Ah, outra coisa completamente: o dono indiano da cyber-caverna, a quem pedia um scan das cenouras, como que congelou. Até gaguejou. Queria saber se eu era de lá, Sverige. Porque Sverige é onde ele quer ir, onde tem a família, Portugal é só o vestíbulo, o purgatório que leva a Sverige. Não sou de lá, não. Perguntou há quanto tempo estava cá. 20 anos, enrubreci, caindo de outros tantos degraus na escala da sua consideração.

The Swedish (the English has only one sentence) Wikipedia-entry tells me that:
Namnet kan ha antingen samiskt eller finskt ursprung. Det samiska ordet kuorpa betyder ”land, härjat av skogseld” och luobbal utvidgning/lugnvatten i å/älv.
when i have it traduced, out comes this:
The name may have either Sami or Finnish origin. The Sami kuorpa word means "country, wracked by FOREST FIRE" and luobbal expansion / calm waters in the / river.
country wracked by forest fire by the calm waters of the river? In 13 letters? The Sami (or the Finns) must be precise people. (Since I saw their perfect podlike reindeer-sledges in "Kautokeino opprøret" I favor the Sami...)
Just groping around: About Greiff's "mástil rosa e negro": a pink and black mast? Except for the obvious, mástil also means the neck of a guitar, or any such music instrument. Often black and sometimes made of rosewood.

Korpilombolo Project (2)
The Rainbow Scout is at it again.
Im Herbst 2004 wurde in Korpilombolo ein Symposium über den kolombianischen Verfasser und Diplomaten Léon de Greiff (1895-1976) veranstaltet. Dieser gilt als eine der eigensinnigsten Stimmen in der südamerikanischen Lyrik und war auch in der engeren Wahl des Nobelpreises einbezogen.
...Leon de Greiffs Grossvater, Carl Sigismund de Greiff, trat nämlich mit seiner Gattin im Jahre 1825 von Malmö aus seine Reise nach Kolombien an.Korpilombolo erhielt in de Greiffs Büchern eine philosophisch-symbolische Bedeutung als "den absoluten Zufluchtsort ". Dies sollte im Zusammenhang gesehen werden mit der Zeit, die de Greiff im kolombianischen Ort Bolombolo ("Gaspar von der Nacht in Korpilombolo" ) verbrachte.
Ok. Bolombolo. A "populated place" (meaning really small) of touristic appeal on the Caucha river in Colombia, between places called Venecia and Concordia and Angelopolis.
I won't go into Gaspard de la nuit, cette nuit. it's too late.
Just one more thing: my Rainbow Trout also tells me Leon de Greiff has written something called Variaciones alrededor de la nada, Variations around nothing.
So i looked for nothing midway between Korpilombolo and Bolombolo. I found it immediately. It's called Lombolo. Another "populated place" in Congo near the border to Gabon. Here it is:
Haven't counted kms yet, but wouldn't bet my new ice-gloves on too much asymmetry.
Next morning:
If I get to keep my gloves depends on how much precision you want: Bolombolo sits at the point of an almost isosceles triangle.

The Korpilombolo Project
Korpilombolo is a community of 548 inhabitants in the north of the north of northern Sweden. Nothing there except pines and wind. Wikipedia states the world largest sun-dial, and Sweden largest telecommunication mast as the interest of the municipality. But Wikipedia doesn’t know it all. A Raibow Scout in the narrowest street of Stockholm put me on the tracks : Korpilombolo is double. Korpilombolo has a shadow sister.
